The Chilean copyright office was closed, I have come to the Chilean copyright office at least five times and I’m a bit disappointed about it. I thought that the paper work would be a bit faster and less lasting. Why should a foreigner like me come to the copyright office you may think, oh well , I wanted to do this from ever, since I started the book and although I know it wont be free to get I want to be very cheap and available to any foreigner student that comes to this country., it has a lot of my experiences here, a description of how is to live in a far country from home can be, things like freak tips about hostels, trips, food and serious things like medical advice, urgencies, lawyers, etc.

Not because I wrote this book it means is good, at all, but honestly is good, is good enough to give you the strength to keep going on your stage, to give you a hand in a bad moment, to help you to understand the Chilean culture and I don’t want to be mugged or to see the book published by someone that only wants to make profits of it. Is not the end of the book, that’s why I want to go to the Chilean copyright office and register this book. The Chilean copyright office is the one that takes care about the copyright, about the design and patents. There are no many copyright offices around here, not around anywhere actually, the one that I’m trying to reach is the only one here in the city.

There are many classifications about copyrights, I did this asset before, once I recorded an EP and I was told to do the music copyright right away to avoid future fakes. I want this book published in less than a year, at least when al the data in it is still fresh, useful and contemporary. My editor, I like to call my roommate as editor because he is the one that has been there since the beginning cheering me up to finish the book, the one that gave me a hand when I needed a hand and the one that showed me most of the places around the university, even when I wanted to move to another place and went together to visit hostels, departments and houses to rent but finally I decided to stay with him and accept that his is not as careful as I am. Anyway he was the one that have all the data collected to have the clue abot the Chilean copyright office and all the paper work we have to do at the Chilean copyright office.

The time passes and I still have to go to the Chilean copyright office to get the papers and forms to register the brand we’ve started to represent at my company, the brand is already registered in France, the place that comes from, we are going to resell their tents, I do own a tent factory in Santiago. We have a brand and also won the representation of this French brand but I was looking at the Chilean copyright office the brand and is not registered to anyone. I called France and told them about the situation, they were a bit surprised, they thought that they were protected by law anywhere in the world because their brand was already registered in Europe. Well seems to not be that easy, I got all the information required to go thru this process and send them thru e-mail. A lawyer there will take care of the case and see what’s more convenient for both parts.

Later on, like a week later, I got an e-mail from the lawyer, he told me that as I do have the representation signed for a five year contract then it would be good to let me do the registration of the brand here, with a contract that says that I will release the brand after I finish representation contracts with them of course, so I did. I went to the Chilean copyright office and got the forms. Later I got in touch with a lawyer that represents my factory and told him the entire situation, he wrote down the contract we should sign in my next trip to France and explained me the process of registration.

Once I’ve got everything going on, the process of registration I mean was time to start doing the business things too. I did some brochures about the brand, I send some files to the designers that work at the factory and gave him instructions to make a DVD with al the company presentation. That material also has to be registered at the Chilean copyright office under the protection of Intellectual Property laws. The Chilean copyright office workers were really nice to me and to my partner, we went together to do all this things done. He wants to open his own business and all this things can help him to understand the process and the way to start with one. Is not hard at all but as you are starting with something you need to get everything together and start doing a million of things at the same time which can be a bit stressful if you don’t have a clear view of your reality. The waiting line was short at the Chilean copyright office, for sure will be faster if we do all this by a lawyers office, but we want to learn how does it work. At least we know now that all the things the lawyer did were correct and have the resolution that to hire a lawyer for sure will get you thru all of these in a quick, safer and easier way than if you do it by yourself. We’ve agreed on that and he will hire one to do the respiration at the Chilean copyright office for his company too when the time to do this comes.
