Hugo Caneo works in the investment and mutual funds, capital markets, regulatory and corporate law practice.
Mr. Caneo has a vast experience in the regulation applicable to the Chilean securities market, its participants and instruments, issuance and registration processes, and regulated companies' compliance. He also has an extensive practice in punitive administrative law matters, administrative and judicial appeals processes against sanctions imposed by regulators.
Before joining the firm in 2006, Mr Caneo worked, from 1997 to 2006, at the "Superintendencia de Valores y Seguros" (SVS) a government organization that fiscalizes all private securities, insurance and investment companies. Within this organization he first worked in its Legal Department, where he was involved in the registration processes of stocks, bonds, national and foreign mutual and investment funds, securitizations, Public Offering Acquisition (OPAs) and activities related to amendments to the Chilean securities markets laws such as the introduction of a new mechanism for retirement fund plans managed by entities under the supervision of the SVS. Later he worked in its Enforcement Division where he was in charge of enforcement proceedings, either in their administrative or in their judicial phase.
In 2005, Hugo Caneo graduated from New York University after having been granted the Fulbright and "Presidente de la República" Scholarships.
Mr. Caneo was Assistant Professor of Securities Market Law at the Catholic University of Chile and he is currently Professor of Corporate Law at the Andrés Bello University.
Hugo Caneo is a member of the Chilean Bar Association.
